"Reel Reviews: ‘Fast X’ has Momoa shining as a gleeful, maniacal villain" by: Jessica Shepard

Look, the “Fast & Furious’ franchise is spanning over 20 years in Hollywood and has cemented itself as a pop-culture icon in its own way.
Since its inaugural first film in 2001, the movie has shown death-defying car chases and stunts alongside an A-List cast, an amazing soundtrack, and gorgeous international locations.
The problem has always been, how do you keep making everything bigger and better for your audience?
Hands down, the highlight of this film is Jason Momoa’s headlining villain ‘Dante Reyes’ refusing to be typecast as the usual muscle-bound and ponytail-sporting moron.
No, Momoa plays Dante as equal parts Lex Luthor, The Joker, and Hannibal Lector – all while wearing pastel nail polish, copious amounts of jewelry, and designer clothing.
Fast X, also known as Fast & Furious 10, is an American action film directed by Louis Leterrier from a story written by Dan Mazeau, Justin Lin, and Zach Dean.
It is the sequel to F9 (2021), the tenth main installment, and the eleventh installment overall in the Fast & Furious franchise.
It stars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto alongside an ensemble cast including Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Leo Perry, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa, Joaquim Almeida, and Charlize Theron.
The movie is 141 minutes long and rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, language, and some suggestive material.
The stage is set in 2011 Rio de Janeiro where cartel leader Hernan Reyes (Almeida) discusses the future of his empire with his wild son Dante (Momoa) before their $100 million vault is stolen by Dominic Toretto (Diesel) and Brian O’Conner (Walker).
During the ensuing car chase, Dom takes out both Dante and his father, opting to stay behind and let Brian escape to be with his family.
In the present day, Dom and his team are tasked by the Agency to steal a computer chip during its transit in Rome.
Dom and his wife Letty Ortiz (Rodriguez) stay behind with his son Brian “Little B” Marcos (Perry), while the rest of the team travels to Rome.
However, a wounded Cipher (Theron) arrives at Dom’s home and informs him that Dante Reyes has turned her crew against her and is using them to target Dom in revenge for his father’s death ten years prior.
Little Nobody (Eastwood) takes Cipher into custody but reveals to Dom and Letty that there is no Agency mission in Rome.
Realizing that Dante set them up, Dom and Letty go to rescue the team.
In Rome, Dante locks the team in a truck containing a bomb while Dom and Letty pursue them.
The bomb is released through the streets, so Dom pushes it into the Tiber River to minimize the damage.
Letty is arrested, and Agent Aimes (Ritchson), the Agency’s de facto leader since Mr. Nobody’s disappearance, believes that Dom and his team are responsible for the bombing and begin a manhunt, attaching a multi-million dollar bounty to everyone’s heads.
While the storyline is overall a jumble of bits and pieces from the other Fast franchise films, it’s worth it to see Momoa creatively outsmart the Toretto family’s every move.
Don’t go into it expecting it to make sense and just enjoy it for the absolute absurdity it is.
After all, part two isn’t due until 2025 and you’ll catch a clip mid-credits explaining why!
