In Other Words....
I bet you already guessed I was the black sheep in my family.
It was a struggle for me to fit in.
It wasn’t even about fitting in, it was that sense of belonging I didn’t innately pick up on.
Granted, being the baby of the family, my parents dotted on me, the siblings, not so much.
My sisters were respectively 4 and 5 ½ years older than me; my brothers were light years away from me with more than a decade older in ages.
When I showed up, my sisters would scatter for fear my mom would ask them to take me along to their friend’s house, a fate worse than death.
Get the picture?
No one ever said to me, “Hang in there, things will get better based on science twenty years from now.”
The old adage that the brain was not created for happiness, but instead for survival is true.
But the potential to rewire your brain by feeding it an adaptive code puts you back in the driver’s seat according to @timeinvestors on Instagram.
They highlight 11 psychological ideas that assist you in crossing the bridge from survival to happiness:
1.) The Connection Paradox- Science proves relationships predict happiness more than wealth. But here’s the secret: Quality>Quantity. One deep alliance rewires your brain more than 100 shallow ties. 2.) The Gratitude Weapon- Gratitude isn’t soft, it’s mind control. MRI scans show 21 days of gratitude practice literally rewires neural pathways.
3.) Body Intelligence - Your body is smarter than your conscious mind. Fear isn’t weakness, it signals growth. Tension isn’t random, it’s trapped energy. Masters treat physical sensations as raw data.
4.) The 1% Rule- Stop chasing “perfect” happiness. Ask: How can I improve by 1% today? 365 days of 1% shifts= 3,778% transformations. Control the controllables - The stoics whispered this 2,000 years ago: Power comes only from what you control. *Your reactions, *Your choices, *Your mindset. Everything else? Noise.
6.) Surround yourself with Expanders - Your environment writes your destiny. Visionaries expand your mind. Fearful people shrink it. Delete the Shrinkers. Hunt the Expanders.
7.) Movement as Medicine - Exercise isn’t about looks. It releases endorphins stronger than antidepressants. One workout=12 hours of improved mood. Your Body is your pharmacy.
8.) Strategic Retail Therapy- Yes, buying can boost happiness, if it’s strategic. Studies show spending on experiences>stuff increases long-term joy.
9.) Museums Expand Consciousness - Museum visits boost creativity and lower cortisol. Immersing in Art expands neural pathways for perspective.
10.) Nature Immersions - Two hours in nature per week reduces depression by 23%. Trees regulate your nervous system. Your DNA remembers the Forest.
11.) Treat Yourself Strategically - Hedonic resets aren’t weakness. They’re tools. Small rewards trigger dopamine Loops that sustain momentum.
Science created the Black Sheep Phenomenon. Most people run the same mental script: Chase comfort.
Avoid risk. Follow the crowd.
Patterns like this keep the brain stuck. The “Black Sheep” breaks the script.
Black sheep train their mind differently.
It *Chooses growth over approval;
*Surrounds themselves with Expanders.
*Engineers habits that rewire the brain;
*Build joy instead of chasing it.
In other words, happiness isn’t random. It’s a system. Remember, the crowd searches for happiness.
The Black Sheep builds it.
Decide which one you are.
