"Mom acts as tour guide for weekend visit to Palacios" by: Jessica Shepard

This weekend, we stopped down in Palacios to check out the Palacios Preservation Association’s garage sale supporting The Luther Hotel.
Now, I have a confession to make about my experiences in Palacios – including this little jaunt for the sale, I’d only ever been in the town a total of four times that I can remember.
That’s mostly due to the way our coverage is structured over the course of a week and what events are happening at large in the county.
It also depends on who gets to cover said events – usually it’s either Mike or myself, but, sometimes my mom lends a hand.
And don’t get me started on folks who don’t communicate with us about their events and just expect us to know via word-of-mouth!
I have to give you guys a reminder here and tell you that we don’t traffic in rumors or gossip and need factual sources before we pursue something.
That includes covering events as well as writing stories.
Luckily, the only place in the newspaper cut out for opinions is the spots on Page 3 every week.
Anyway, last Saturday was a pretty easy day since we only knew about the sale and the monthly “Trade Day” on the square.
We were able to snap some shots on the square and head to Palacios to endure my mom’s recounting of how things used to be out on that side of the county when she was a child.
Now, some of those landmarks she recalls have changed hands from certain families or the overall landscape has changed but, for the most part, she could recall names and locations fairly easily.
Naturally, I tuned her out on some points because my interest level just wasn’t the same as Mike’s.
Mike loves history and old buildings, so when my mom talks about things that happened before he came to Matagorda County in 1997 – he listens intently.
My only goal as of then was surviving the heat and hogging the two air condition vents in the back seat.
After we browsed the sale and made a few purchases for ourselves we went and had lunch at Mike’s on Main – somewhere I’ve never been either!
But Mom and Mike both raved about the food and I was glad to experience something new.
By the way, the food was delicious and I highly recommend anyone and everyone trying the grilled chicken sandwich or steak sandwich whenever they go.
We also stopped by a few boutique shops downtown and I did get to admire a lot of the old buildings while Mom and Mike spent most of their time talking.
After that, Mom took us along the bay-adjacent roads and she pointed out her favorite houses along the way.
My only landmarks of reference were the library and high school!
That all being said, it was an overall nice experience and could prove to be something we’ll repeat in the future.
I just don’t know if I can handle Mom repeating the same tour guide sort of updates along the way and might have to bring my headphones for some privacy.
