The 2026-2028 version of the UIL District football and basketball Realignment surfaced late Sunday.
For Matagorda County coaches, I don’t imagine there were any local surprises.
I’m reporting in this edition that all four county high schools that play football are in the same conferences and divisions they’re accustomed.
The districts’ numbers are different and that’s about it.
After all, none of the district saw much or any enrollment increase or decrease.
Mainly, it’s those urban districts that go up.
The 5A-2 schools seem to show the enrollment movement early, as they exist in the shadow of the 6A schools.
District 11 – like Bay City in 4A-1, and Palacios in 3A-1 – has a different look elsewhere.
District 11 in 5A-2 is comprised of nothing but Ft. Bend schools and one district that isn’t - Victoria West.
Kind of seems like a weird gerrymandering, except I don’t remotely think that’s the case.
It’s just hard to group all of the schools in one geographical area with the same enrollment.
Victoria West now become everyone’s district road trip.
My high school alma mater – Kerrville Tivy – now joins Bay City as a 4A-1 district.
Tivy had risen to 5A-2.
Kerrville drew the big box stores along I-10 and showed serious retail growth throughout the city.
When I moved to Bay City in 1997, it was roughly the same size as Kerrville.
Kerrville grew in early 2000s and the subdivisions were blossoming everywhere.
But Kerrville’s subdivision growth was partly sparked as it always has – with well-off senior citizens.
Funny I’m saying that, since I used to complain when I lived there about residents who were then my age now.
Irony, or karma, for me.
Kerrville’s real disadvantage – I’m told by my high school friends who remain there – is no industry.
That’s not a problem for Bay City or Matagorda County.
There’s some young people moving in – Kerrville is a pretty place.
I have no real idea how the July 4th flood plays into all of this.
Back when I played at Kerrville, there were still plenty of ranches and a thriving wool and mohair business.
Several teammates back then hailed from the ranches.
Anyway, Kerrville dropped down to the same district as Fredericksburg and several Austin area schools.
Back then, we played Fredericksburg, Uvalde, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Crystal City and San Antonio schools.
Uvalde stayed 4A-1, with Kerrville, Crystal City dropped down – no surprise there – while Del Rio and Eagle Pass are both 6A, with four Laredo schools and San Antonio Southwest.
