"Vacations look different to me on the inside, outside" by: Jessica Shepard

It’s now August and we’re rolling into back-to-school time, fall sports, and I can just see the rush of fundraisers beyond the horizon.
Well, all of that plus a few holidays sprinkled in, too!
Last week we kicked around the possibility of a small vacation before things really crank up and leave us too busy for much else outside of newspaper work.
As I’ve mentioned before, what mom and Mike like about vacations is honestly the exact opposite of what I enjoy.
Mostly, my idea of a vacation is taking time to recharge and not worry about work-related things.
The parents prefer to be out and doing something somewhere.
I mean, I see the appeal to go somewhere you’ve never been for a new experience – don’t get me wrong.
But, I prefer something restful, peaceful, and relaxing since I’m always on the go doing something.
I do enjoy getting out of town and going somewhere I haven’t been in a while or new, but the entire process burns me out the further away they propose we go.
I mean, I cringe at packing for more than three days, finding dog and house sitting help and the minute mom mentions taking a flight to anywhere I’m instantly refusing to leave.
That’s also why I just let them jaunt off into the sunset and spend my time in the comfort of home with the pets.
And I think that realistically should suit everyone just fine – as long as it truly is a free weekend and they don’t just run off to leave me to work.
I’ve got a terrible fear of heights when it comes to airplanes and I’m not sure my doctor can prescribe anything strong enough to keep me from having a panic attack.
Personally, I’d rather take a cruise than a plane even if that also depends on the duration at sea, locations being explored, and if it’s an adult-only cruise or something that allows children.
Nothing against children on cruises but it’s not something I’d sign up for and enjoy.
I’m also working on convincing mom to take a cruise for her birthday rather than trying to get me medicated enough for a flight to Florida for a Disney trip.
Still, statistically speaking most Americans take vacations during the summer months of June and July.
Along with those stats, the most popular destinations for tourists are beaches, national parks, and major cities.
Well, I can say that my proximity to the beach has that destination fulfilled and national parks are great in theory – but I really hate dealing with mosquitos.
Again, if I’m going to deal with something inconvenient, I’d rather do so with the comforts of home.
Maybe I’m just biased about it, but, I think I have the most comfortable bed around and wouldn’t trade a sweltering jaunt through a national park or city just to end up in a hotel.
Plus, I’d spend far too much time worrying about the dogs and cats at home to be able to relax and get any sleep in a new place anyway!
It really seems unsettling to try and sleep in a new place with noises I’m not used to and those include other people.
I’ll take cats running amok at 3 a.m. more than someone slamming doors or running up and down a hotel hallway.
