PSA: Cutting spending can boost savings for retirement

   Can you enjoy a comfortable retirement?  It depends on how much you save - and how much you spend.  The more you can reduce your spending, the more money you can save for retirement through your retirement plans, like an IRA and 401(k).

‘Trigger Warnings’

   It’s Halloween week.  Merchandise already hit the stores a couple of months ago and plenty of ‘fight or flight’ fright movies (say that three times quickly), settle into our psyche the minute the sun goes down and the lights go out.  I’m already triggered by these previous sentences.

   October has seemed like a strange month for me this year.  I’m used to it passing by in the blink of an eye, but have instead found myself in this strange bit of limbo.   Maybe it’s just my perception of time, but it doesn’t feel like much of anything was happening before the Rice Festival.

   We had the banks issue earnings last week and will have a significant amount of earnings reports from other sectors like new autos.   This week’s reports should provide some insight to consumer strength.   No matter, as the S&P 500 stock index has posted six straight weeks of gains.

   Are you leaving an inheritance to your loved ones?   If so, you may want to prepare them.   First of all, let them know what’s in your estate plan - your will, living trust, or other legal documents you’ve created.
