"Reel Reviews: ‘Meg 2: The Trench’ making waves in overseas cinema markets" by: Jessica Shepard

I don’t know about anyone else, but, I feel like you don’t watch shark attack movies at the height of summer to take them seriously.
I mean, the first ‘Jaws’ movie came out in 1975 and people have continued flocking to beaches all over the world since then anyway.
Personally, I’m very cautious when it comes to swimming or playing at the beach anyway due to how many riptides we get on the coast.
That didn’t change when the first ‘Meg’ film came out in 2018 either!
However, this one ups the prehistoric shark ante considerably and I loved every moment of it!
Between the characters and their witty banter set to an awesome mix of classic rock songs amidst monsters from the deep – it’s an exciting ride.
Meg 2: The Trench is a 2023 science fiction action film directed by Ben Wheatley from a screenplay by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris.
It is based on the 1999 novel ‘The Trench’ by Steve Alten.
Serving as the sequel to The Meg (2018), the film stars Jason Statham, Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels, Sienna Guillory, and Cliff Curtis.
Clocking in at 116 minutes, the movie is rated PG-13 for action/violence, some bloody images, language, and brief suggestive material.
Five years after the events of the first film, Jonas Taylor (Statham) has been involved in fighting environmental crimes while also helping Mana One in exploring a further deep part of the Mariana Trench where the Megalodon has been found.
Following the death of Suyin Zhang, Taylor has been raising her teenage daughter Meiying (Cai) alongside her uncle and Suyin’s brother Jiuming Zhang (Wu), who has acquired his father’s company with the help of wealthy financier Hillary Driscoll (Guillory).
Mana One has also been studying a female Meg called Haiqi, who was discovered as a pup and trained by Jiuming in a reserve in Hainan China.
Recently Haiqi has been acting erratically, leading to Taylor being concerned despite Jiuming’s enthusiasm.
Taylor and Jiuming lead a routine submersible exploration to the Trench, with Meiying stowing away to see the trench for the first time.
Fellow Meg survivors DJ (Kennedy) and Mac (Curtis) observe the group from the Mana One.
On their way down, the subs are pursued by Haiqi, who escaped captivity the previous night.
This leads the subs to dive down through the thermocline to escape, but Haiqi forces her way through it anyway.
Two much larger Megs, a massive alpha male and a slightly smaller beta, appear and mate with Haiqi.
While working on an escape plan, Taylor and his team discover an illegal mining operation in a station captained by a mercenary Montes (Mencheta), who has a vendetta against Taylor for his imprisonment sometime before.
I can’t recall who said it but the deepest parts of the ocean rival outer space for creepiness - even on the big screen.
There’s just something about watching people stumble around underwater with limited oxygen and all manner of creatures slithering out of the darkness that should add this film to the thriller or horror genre, too.
Overall, it’s a fun romp if you’re in the mood for a sequel that doesn’t take itself too seriously and still provides plenty of entertainment.
