"First Fall cold front this week brings Halloween hopes" by:Jessica Shepard

What’s better than ringing in the first official day of fall than having a cold front blow through and drop nighttime temperatures into the high 50s?
Not to mention, since it happens Wednesday, I’m writing about it beforehand – but, we’ll ignore that!
I’m talking about crunchy leaves, shorter daylight hours, and the spookiest season of the year.
If there’s anything you’ll remember about me, it’s that I liiiiive for Halloween and all its candy-coated pumpkin glory!
Now, I know that the cold front will be short-lived and we’re heading into a hot weekend after that, however, the first day of fall always holds a special place in my heart.
As a child in school, it always marked the long stretch between the start of school and waiting for that glorious mini-vacation during Thanksgiving.
Plus it helped me count down the days until my birthday and Halloween.
That’s right folks, I’m a late October baby and have taken full advantage of that fact to invest in copious amount of Halloween decorations.
It’s also the best time to get my hands on any horror movies that I don’t own at a sale price while indulging in pumpkin-scented everything.
As it stands, I’ve been trying the past few weekends to encourage mom to get our glass pumpkin collection out to display on the mantle.
Said mantle has been under-decorated since we packed up the spring and Easter décor in April.
For me, it’s always a wonderful sight to see those pumpkins and gourds lined up so artistically with a few faux leaves here and there.
Not to mention mom’s latest obsession – gnomes!
The little bearded dudes have come out in seasonal apparel and designs for everything from Easter and Christmas to Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day.
Most of them are hideous to me, but here are a handful that mom and I agree on, so, we bought them.
I don’t think Mike is quite a fan of them, but he’s not in charge of decorating.
Sadly, Hurricane Nicholas shot that decorating idea in the foot last week and we’ve still got some recuperation leftover from that terrible event.
We were without power for about 42 hours and it gave me flashbacks from February’s Winter Storm Uri.
Though, I think I handled the cold better than the lingering humidity and heat last week.
If anything, the entire fiasco taught us to prepare a little better and we’re making supply investments.
I’m talking batteries, lanterns, flashlights, and better gas cans for storage.
We always keep water on hand, so we were set for that, but the loss of power hit us the hardest.
Well, that and the loss of my favorite tree nut – pecan!
We’ve got seven trees that were about to produce a huge harvest before Nicholas hit and I’m still extra salty about it.
In case you’ve never heard ‘salty’ used in that sense, it’s relatively new and equates to someone being upset, angry, or bitter about something.
That being said, I’ll be extra salty if we lose the few pecans we have left or Halloween gets rained out again, I’ll still be a faithful viewer.
