"Lots to dislike in what’s going down in Austin, America" by: Mike Reddell

I’m sure I’m far from alone from worrying about our state and our nation.
I’m likewise sure I’m far from being aligned with other Texans I know.
Statewide and nationwide the issues that torment me begin with the Texas Democratic legislators who fled from Austin rather than go along with the Republicans’ Trump mandate redistricting map.
That map would heavily dilute the voting power of Hispanic and Black voters.
  Republicans have said as much.
Still, Trump supporters Gov. Greg Abbott, Attorney General Ken Paxton and GOP lawmakers demand the Democrats’ return so they can get their quorum, approve the new map and set voting rights back by years.
The new map will mean the already GOP lopsided Texas Congressional delegation will be even redder.
And the Texas Republicans have bigger plans to move the state as far right as possible.
Trump already is governing this country with a heavy hand.
As I write this, he is delighted over National Guard troops taking over the streets of our nation’s capital.
As usual, his justification doesn’t align with the crime or the homelessness, which he says is out of control in Washington, DC.   DC’s crime rate was down, numbers show.
But more importantly for Trump, moving the troops along Washington streets is having the desired effect of creating fear – not only in that city, but other cities, such as Chicago.
Trump also threatens those other cities with federal troops.
Here’s the deal, Trump already is moving forward with a lot of things that a majority of Americans disagree with – cuts to Medicaid, immigration, the tariffs that are a tax on Americans and, the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.
About those Medicaid cuts. Millions of American will lose health insurance and hospitals and clinics serving low-income patients will close.
  They already are.
Republicans misrepresented the cuts to Medicaid. The Big, Beautiful Bill happened.
If Trump is capable of creating this much havoc now, with majorities in both the House and Senate, what will happen if he succeeds in deepening the GOP majorities.
He’s talked before about doing away with the 2026 elections.
And, folks, that would be it for Democracy in America.
Because Trump will never stop groping for power.
So, yea, I’m sure there are plenty of Texans that see the other side somehow.
But after today’s grandstanding in Washington, I wonder what you see as a good thing for America.
I don’t plan to quit opposing the crippling of America’s democracy.
