"Things I’m looking forward to this New Year" by: Jessica Shepard

Now, last week, I revealed that my family wasn’t a big participant in “New Year’s resolutions.”
That’s still true a week later.
However, I will say that there are certain things we look forward to in the upcoming days, weeks, and months.
Most of mine have been centered on my broken leg experiences and are directly the result of the nature of healing said broken bone.
Most of all I look forward to walking normally without some form of assistance and driving again.
Not only do I miss the independence, but it also made things easier for my mom and Mike.
Unfortunately, there are still some steps to be made to reach that goal and I’m hobbling forward as best I can.
My next medical update happens next week, so, I’m hoping to be put on a schedule for physical therapy and transitioning out of the walking boot to real shoes.
Granted, those shoes might have to be brand new, but, I’ll take the expense for the sake of my leg and balance.
Anything to make moving easier and provide less impact to my right ankle joint is definitely on my radar.
While working toward that goal, I’ve had to dig my combat boots out of the recesses of my closet and invested in new gel insoles for the interim.
Or, really, at least until we get more input from my doctor.
After all, I prefer his professional opinion rather than whatever mom feels might be the best for me.
Don’t get me wrong, my mom is right about 80% of the time when it comes to handling the needs of the family best.
However, this is the first time anyone in the family has broken a leg and had surgery – so I’m a guinea pig yet again.
As the eldest child that’s always been my default role, but, now I get to add more experiences under my belt.
Among those include getting the chance to see a variety of new movies before the rest of the household.
I’m excited about the next installments in the John Wick, Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, Dune, Hunger Games, Transformers, DC Extended Universe, and Marvel Cinematic Universe franchises.
And really, those are only the big names – who knows what other fresh and unknown titles will crop up between now and Dec. 31, 2023?
Either way, it should make for some interesting movie reviews!
Beyond that, we’re still working out newspaper coverage for events, games, civic meetings, fundraisers, and community organizations.
Once I start physical therapy in earnest, then I’ve got to build up my stamina again and that impacts how long I can stand, walk or attend.
The last time we were in a situation similar to this was in 2016 and it took nearly two years for me to equalize myself again.
I’m hoping that that past experience has left me with enough knowledge to be more prepared and hopefully reduce that timeline.
Then again, even the best intentions and most-wanted wishes can only be fulfilled at the right time.
I just know that my goals and these future tasks will only be accomplished with my wonderfully supportive network of family and friends.
