"Trying to pin down birthday gift ideas leads to Amazon listing" by: Jessica Shepard

With my birthday on the horizon, I’ve been asked several times what I want as a gift and I have a hard time naming something specific.
At any given moment I’m thinking of at least five different things I could enjoy as a gift but they all seem to disappear the moment someone asks me.
Plus, if I do manage to retain something long enough to tell the asker what it is, I’m probably stumped on the cost or impact it might have on their wallets.
And now that I’m thinking about it to write this column, it mostly boils down to an understanding that inflation is ridiculously high right now and there are levels of “gifts” I categorize based on my needs at the time.
An example is getting the air conditioning fixed or new tires for my car – both of which are borderline necessities and definitely the most expensive things that will probably end up on my Christmas list this year.
Lesser price point items are naturally prioritized higher because they’re more realistic and provide a bit more enjoyment over time rather than a necessity for adulting day-to-day.
I mean, how much fun can you really have with new tires unless you’re a car enthusiast?
I know that my little Ford Focus isn’t going to do much more than shuttle me from A-to-B and therefore needs functionality over some ridiculous automotive display.
Otherwise, I’m down for a lunch date, a movie experience, or a day trip exploring something or somewhere nearby.
After being frozen in the middle of several conversations to try and name something for a few friends I decided to create a gift list on Amazon to direct them towards.
It’s got a handful of various books, CDs, videogames, coloring books, and arts and crafts supplies to inspire them.
Overall, I really just enjoy being surprised when it comes to a gift and that includes meals and movies – as long as I know the schedule and can work out newspaper coverage if needed!
Honestly, I thought it was a great idea up until I came across an Instagram post with news about the newest Crocs and Pokémon collaboration featuring Gengar styled Croc clogs.
Unfortunately, I can’t add that version of Crocs to my Amazon wish list just yet, but I’m watching and eagerly awaiting its availability this Thursday.
Now, I only started my Croc journey in 2021, but, have been a vocal supporter after my broken leg incident.
I mean, my physical therapist fully endorsed them as the best sandal type of shoe to wear post-recovery.
I may have bought into the trend more than I initially ever thought I would by buying up charms to further decorate the aforementioned clogs.
Considering that the shoes themselves have been around since 2002 – I have no shame in admitting that I hated the clogs as soon as they came onto the footwear scene.
However, I haven’t dabbled much into the vast assortment of other shoes Crocs has outside of a pair of flats for more “business dress-coded” events.
If I do get those shiny new Gengar Crocs then I can retire my well-worn pair and get new decorative charms in the progress – that’s a win-win scenario in my book.
