While I’m enjoying the sudden drop in temperatures into the mid-80s and drizzly days for the past two weeks – it isn’t enough to keep me from wishing for the end of summer to come faster.
Officially, the last day of summer is Thursday, Sept. 22.
At least that’s according to our calendar, but, not so much in regards to our weather.
Any born and raised local knows that we can have summer weather all the way through to Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Even then, we’re still not clear for hurricane season until it’s over on Wednesday. Nov. 30.
We’re currently halfway through and that’s good news for the most part.
Even if I find it weird to have so much rain lately without a hurricane in the gulf.
But, I’m not complaining!
I’m just trying to wrap my mind around Mother Nature’s weather patterns here.
Regardless, I’m trying to contain my love for autumn activities and holidays while enjoying my time off for Labor Day.
Mom and I are contemplating the seasonal change for home décor in our communal living areas and the kitchen.
She wants to ease you into fall and I’m already prepared for full-on Halloween decorations.
With the newspaper holding the fort down in the dining room, we’re looking at rotating some features we haven’t had in a few years since COVID-19 hit the county.
One item is my favorite artificial Halloween tree I got for a birthday present eight years ago.
It’s got black branches, orange lights, and a skull base that has glowing green eyes when turned on.
Since it hasn’t been out of the box for eight years, I’ve had time to amass more ornaments for it – including some “Day of the Dead” items.
Now, I know that the holiday events aren’t synonymous, but mom only lets me have the one three-foot tree to decorate for Halloween.
So, that means I’m going to take full advantage of the moment and let it stand in place for both celebrations.
The only other problem is planning on where to display said tree due to the cats and Penny’s penchant for getting into things.
Most of it is puppy curiosity for her and the rest is the cats just being naughty.
Unfortunately, when we were recently in the Houston area and looking for fall-ish decorations, we came up short in several stores.
Now, most have an expansive selection of items online, but, we’d hoped to experience a few things in person.
That being said, we were mostly let down by the empty shelves we came across.
But, we scored a few pieces like a new handheld glass pumpkin in a bluish teal sort of color and a golden glass gourd to add to our overall glass pumpkin collection.
We saw a few more but agreed to evaluate our current collection and see what colors or styles we needed to finish filling up the mantle spaces.
However, we also agree that we’re fonder of the glass pumpkins without lights attached on their bottom sides than those with the lights attached.
I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that we can just display the full spectrum of our autumn decorations sooner rather than later.
