"Wishing for a ‘winter wonderland’ since 2004 Christmas snow" by: Jessica Shepard

Ever since we got snow during Christmas in 2004, I’ve wanted a repeat of the experience.
Granted, we’re not prepared for any great drops in temperatures for a prolonged period of time at the moment, but a few inches of snow would make for a more picturesque backdrop.
Plus, it’d be fun to see how the new pets handle such phenomena!
I was a junior in high school when we got the snow that year.
We definitely spent more time outside making the most of those reported 8-10 inches and creating a bunch of soggy laundry for mom to wash than playing with anything we got under the tree or in our stockings.
I think the only thing I was salty about back then was the fact that I hadn’t received my letterman jacket for my years as a first soprano in the female-only choirs.
I’m not sure why, but the tradition is to get a letterman jacket in the spring semester and I complained about it then as I do now.
I had to make do with several layers and spent plenty of time in the sunlight if I started getting too cold.
The things I learned from that two-day event helped me prepare for college when I went to Angelo State University some years later.
And even though I got plenty
of snow there, too – it didn’t have the same magical seasonal effect as it did on Christmas!
After all, this Christmas Eve had us hitting 90% humidity overall with thunderstorm predictions hitting in the early afternoon and then tapering off for the night.
New Year’s Eve is looking about the same for us, maybe less humidity and drizzling overall but the temperatures are going to hit that prime zone between 40-60 degrees.
I suppose as long as things are moderate, it won’t be a total bust for any possible plans to ring in the New Year – should we make any last minute.
My sister’s birthday is the same day, but we’re doing her celebratory meal a few days prior and she gets the majority of her actual gifts on Christmas Day, too.
It’s a tradition we’ve had as long as I can remember and I’m a little curious about where she picks to eat her meal, but will always provide helpful suggestions.
Outside of that, we might light a few fireworks if my brother is still around.
Otherwise, I think we’ll appreciate the chance to rest, relax, and let the New Year inauguration pass by without much fanfare.
We’re just not a family that parties out loud a lot very often and when my siblings are gone, there’s less of a reason to disrupt the entire household’s usual routine anyway.
Besides, without my siblings, I’m the only night owl that stays up late and my kitten Bones is the only other mammal that would join me then anyway.
Despite that, I hope every one of you has a fun and safe New Year’s experience.
Whether solo or around family and friends don’t let the lack of ‘winter wonderland’ weather keep you from enjoying the holiday!
