Significant restoration efforts are just beginning at our historic Luther Hotel, located in the heart of Palacios, Texas.
As the hotel prepares to return to its roots, with plans to once again feature “the longest porch in Texas,” visitors to the area over the holidays witnessed the ongoing work of clearing debris from the foundation of the old motor court and enhancing the grounds with festive poinsettias and wreaths.
Behind the scenes, Luther Hotel owner JP Bryan’s dedicated team is working closely with various preservation organizations and the Texas Historical Commission to ensure that the renovation stays true to the hotel’s rich history.
“There is a lot going on behind the scenes to make sure we don’t make any mistakes, and we ensure an authentic restoration. Initial architect’s drawings and preliminary renditions are being reviewed and a variety of options discussed. We will be excited to share these as soon as approvals are obtained,” said Kendall Spriggs, Bryan’s property manager for the hotel.
In the meantime, the Palacios Preservation Association (PPA) announced its role as a local partner in the Smithsonian/Texas Historical Commission Crossroads Exhibit, opening in Rockport on Jan. 25 and running through March 9.
This prestigious exhibit explores the evolution of rural America, showcasing its resilience, innovation, and cultural significance.
As part of this collaboration, the PPA will feature a creative display highlighting the “Saving of the Luther Hotel.”
The centerpiece is a meticulously crafted 3-D printed replica of the hotel at a 1:46th scale.
Created by talented PPA members, Robin Reynolds, Karmen Schuster, Chuck Madeley, and Brandi and Stuart Pitman, the model includes intricate details such as a miniature proprietor, Jack Findley, on the upstairs porch.
Visitors may even spot a playful nod to the hotel’s legendary ghost(s)!
The display backdrop narrates the hotel’s 120-year-old history, while the apron highlights notable guests.
We thank Humanities Texas for the generous grant to support this project.
Additionally, the PPA invites you to experience the Crossroads partnership through a unique fence walk wrap exhibit around the Hotel in Palacios.
This installation features panels chronicling events at the hotel throughout its long history concluding with changeable panels showing the restoration process and describing the various steps of restoration.
The Luther Hotel exemplifies a true crossroads in rural America, reflecting the community’s commitment to preserving its past while building a vibrant future!
Please join us for this look back before the excitement of the restoration pushes us into the exciting future!
