"MCHC meets at the Luther Hotel" By Carol Gibbs

Chairman Matagorda County Historical Commission

The Matagorda County Historical Commission celebrated History Appreciation when they met at the historic Luther Hotel in Palacios on May 14.
Following the business meeting, Jacob Valdez, History Appreciation committee chairman introduced the Luther Hotel manager, Chelette Baker, who recounted a history of the hotel.
The original structure, known as the Bay View Hotel, was designed by Jules Leffland and built in 1903 on East Bay.
It was constructed of longleaf yellow pine from Louisiana with cypress siding.
It was moved to the current South Bay Boulevard location so it would be near the elaborate pavilion, which was also designed by Leffland.
The east and west wings were added as well as a dining room that could seat 200.
After several owners, Charles and Elsie Luther purchased the hotel in 1936 and renovated it into apartments.
Families of Camp Hulen soldiers lived at the Luther during WWII.
The Luther’s daughter, Claire Joy, inherited the hotel and her husband, Jack Findley, inherited it on her death.
Jack ran the hotel until he became ill in 2010.
He asked Mrs. Baker to take over the management while he was ill and after Jack’s death in 2020 has continued to manage the hotel for the family.
The hotel has several historic designations, including a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Texas Historical Commission Recorded Texas Historical Landmark was received in 1965 and The Luther is the only business in Matagorda County designated as a Texas Treasure Business.
MCHC members pictured on the front steps show that they believe “This Place Matters.”
Afterwards, members present toured the hotel and viewed several of the updated rooms, the new Museum Room and the second floor History Hall which displays numerous photos of historic Palacios.
