There were not too many good leaders after King David.
When you study the Kings after David and Solomon, you read many who just did not follow the Lord. King Asa was one of the few who sought after God.
We can read that he, “did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God” (2 Chronicles 14:2).
What can we learn from his life? Asa was a descendant of David. He was the third king of the southern kingdom of Judah.
He ruled for forty-one years (1 Kings 15:10).
As Chip Gaines says, “It’s demo day!” That was something that’s the King did. He tore down the false idols and gods whom they worshiped.
God gave King Asa peace in his kingdom.
During this time he went and built us the walls and cities in the southern kingdom.
Rest from God can cause you to do great works.
While King Asa was a great King, the Bible does not skip over his mistakes.
We read, “At that time, the seer Hanani came to King Asa of Judah and said to him, “Because you depended on the king of Aram and have not depended on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from you.” (2 Chronicles 16:7) (CSB).
King Asa upset the Lord because he did not depend on God. Is a very interesting verse to include because later in the chapter we hear about how the king passes away.
Notice how the Scriptures describe his death. Is is told that, “In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa developed a disease in his feet, and his disease became increasingly severe.
Yet even in his disease he didn’t seek the Lord but only the physicians.” (2 Chronicles 16:12) (CSB).
This is a sharp contrast between him and Hezekiah. In the story of King Hezekiah
The Lord tells him through the prophet Elijah that he is going to die. “Get your house in order” (2 Kings 20:1).
I don’t know about you but a Prophet told me something like that I would definitely be shaken. Elijah was a prophet who did great miracles.
I’m sure Hezekiah was aware of who he was.
As soon as he hears this, he turns his face to the wall, and begins to pray.
The Bible says that God heard his prayer and gave him 15 more years to live (2 Kings 20:5–7).
When I think about King Asa and King Hezekiah, I want to be like King Hezekiah.
I want to go to God with my problems and depend on him. King Asa was a great King.
But at the end of his life, he did not depend on the Lord.
There is no one to preach to in Heaven. There will be no alter calls, God needs his best people healthy and alive.
I’m sure that God would’ve wanted him to live a longer life to help the people of Israel.
Sadly because he did not depend on him, he died.
Now I think there needs to be a clarifying statement, there is nothing wrong going to the doctor or taking medicine.
I believe that God uses many people in the medical field to heal, but they can only help you so much.
When we are sick, we need to go to God.
We need to believe that God is our source. He is our life. We need to depend on him.
If you want to read more about this man you can study Asa’s reign in 1 Kings 15 and 2 Chronicles 14–16.
