"Unfortunate, painful bucket list item achievement unlocked" by: Jessica Shepard

Late Generation X adults and most Millennials have tried their hand at answering online surveys, quizzes, and questions about their favorite things, places, people, or their general life – I’m no exception!
The more random the questionnaire the better, especially if I’m bored and done working for the day.
Sometimes I come across a 20-item list of “life events” that are assigned a certain number of points and when you total up those points, you’re given a range to see how well you’ve “enjoyed” life.
And, sometimes, those lists have traumatic things like being in a car crash, breaking a bone, losing a limb, or watching someone die.
Other times, those lists are for more positive things like meeting your favorite celebrity, going to a live music concert, or going skinny dipping.
Well, thanks to a series of unfortunate events, I can now add points for whatever “broken a bone” counts for on those lists.
It’s similar to unlocking achievements in video games and if I’m totally honest, some of those are horrible achievements too!
Really it just depends on the game and the developers’ sense of humor.
After all, how else could humanity deal with horrible experiences without humor to pull us out of the pain?
Still, despite all of my scrapes, bumps, bruises, and assorted childhood illnesses, I never broke a bone.
I was the lucky recipient of chicken pox, pneumonia, asthma, and several sprained knees or ankles due to soccer, sure, but nothing as serious as a broken bone.
Even when I rolled my Jeep in 2009 on the way back to college after Thanksgiving break, the only injury I suffered was a severely sprained ankle and I lost my glasses.
However, that injury has kept me on alert to the fact that I have weak ankles thanks to the orthopedic doctor’s revelations.
It also made my choices for footwear come under scrutiny and I had to make some changes, too.
You’ll never see me in heels unless they’re thick or platform style – and even then, nothing higher than an inch!
Flat-soled flip-flop sandals are completely frowned upon for weak ankles because they offer no support for the foot at all.
Naturally, that’s narrowed down my choices for summer shoes, but, I’ve learned to make due where I can.
It also means that I can’t wear my favorite Converse Chuck Taylors too many days in a row without an ankle brace either.
Overall, I’ve learned how to manage the issues I’ve got and mediate any unusual occurrences.
Those experiences did not prepare me for a broken fibula!
Out of all the times I’ve been in pain, I have to say that a broken bone is just no joke.
It’s definitely 10-out-of-10 something I wouldn’t wish upon someone at all!
However, I’m grateful to my mom and dad for all the steps they’re taking to help take care of me and keep the paper going.
It isn’t ideal, but, we’re doing our best and I hope that our readers remain as comp                                                              assionate and understanding as they have been in the past.
