What is the meaning of a story Jesus turning water into wine?
While Jesus could do many miracles, His first public one was not until he was 30 years old.
Here is the miracle worker having to wait until the opportune time to begin the miracles.
Because once he does one, many more will take place and as people know about this, they will talk about Jesus. Once people knew about Jesus, the leaders of that time would surely attempt to kill Jesus.
Our Savior had the perfect wisdom and was able to the right thing at the right time.
Now some have speculated that this was non-alcoholic wine.
For me I’m not an alcohol fan.
I do not think that is good for people to drink, so personally having this as Jesus first miracle has always been difficult for me to understand.
As we think about the story we discovered that the wine was first given to the headwaiter.
We read how normally the best one is given at the beginning of the ceremony because as people drink they are less aware of the taste.
So for this to be served first is a bit abnormal.
For the wine to taste good, it wouldn’t have been simple grape juice.
For our church that is what we use because it’s unnecessary to have wine during communion when grape juice does well.
Also the early church even had a situation where some of the believers were having too much of the bread and wine and were getting drunk.
The Apostle Paul told them to avoid this and eat before church. Now we keep it simple.
For wine to be made there must be a crushing of the grapes.
Jesus is our New Wine today, he was crushed for our sake.
The wine is a symbol of joy. Because of Jesus we can have joy!
Also, as wine ages and gets older, it gets more expensive and better.
Jesus took what would normally take a long period of time and did it in an instant.
While wine is a symbol of joy, alcohol is not completely shown in a positive light in the Bible.
King Solomon once said, “It is not for kings to drink wine or for rulers to take strong drink” (Proverbs 31:4).
He also wrote, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise” (Proverbs 20:1).
Alcohol in itself is not a sin, but being drunk is.
It can be costly and we must use Godly wisdom in all parts of our life.
For the bride and groom and specifically their family, it was shameful in this culture to not have enough wine at the wedding.
This is something the groom was supposed to take care of.
By Jesus providing this miracle, he was stepping in as the groom.
Today we are the bride of Christ. We are in a new covenant with Christ and committed to God.
The story reminds us about how God can take what we normally take a long time period of time and he can do it in an instant.
It’s time to trust and believe in His name!
Jesus was crushed on the cross to give us forgiveness.
He brings the joy to our covenant! May we take time to praise the miracle worker!
