Early voting for the Saturday, May 6, elections countywide began Monday at the Service Center in Bay City and the Matagorda County Navigation District No. 1 in Palacios.
The biggest item on county ballots is the Matagorda Harbor expansion proposed by the Port of Bay City Authority.
The $68 million bond issue calls for a 200-acre recreational harbor, which will expand by 28 acres.
There’s a lot in this package, but the important takeaway with this project are the recreational/educational/entertainment possibilities for a growing county that needs to offer more to its citizens now and the ones we expect.

I was at Challenger Baseball’s sunny opening day Saturday and so were a lot of other folks in the stands.
This program serves kids who for emotional, physical or developmental reasons play baseball in the Challenger League.
These kids were excited to be playing and to be a part of a baseball team by all accounts.
It’s a wonderful thing the Challenger League provides along with the many volunteers who are part of this program.
There were two masters of ceremonies for the fund-raising cake sales – District Attorney Steven Reis and Van Vleck’s Gaven Ros.
Gaven, who was best performer at Van Vleck’s one-act play at the Leopard Player’s area competition last week, took over from Reis in seeking bids for the teams’ cakes.
Gaven makes quite the impression when you meet him.

I see no use in extolling the virtues of having a universal calendar of local events.
The idea has come up numerous times and nothing has happened.
At least four events – I’m probably missing others – all started at 9 a.m. Saturday.
It certainly sent the Sentinel’s Jessica Shepard and I scurrying across the county to catch several of Saturday’s events.

LCRA’s long-awaited Arbuckle Reservoir near Lane City was mentioned at Commissioners Court Monday morning, April 24.
OQ Chemicals’ Technical Manager Chris Bischoff was updating the court about OQ water increase request from LCRA as part of the Rohm plant going in.
Bischoff noted that ultimately OQ would come from the Arbuckle.
County Judge Bobby Seiferman said he’s under the impression the reservoir would be online by 2024 – something LCRA indicates on its own website.
LCRA said in a press release I ran in the Sentinel in January there have been problems with the reservoir that was substantially complete – LCRA’s words – in November 2018.
Once its problems are ironed out, the reservoir will have 90,000 acre feet of water per year for the region’s water supply.
