From Fire Marshal Dan Shook
Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, the Bay City Fire Marshal, and the Bay City Police Department were dispatched to a building fire at 1816 Bayou Dr, Bay City at about 5:26 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20.
A local resident notified dispatch his house was on fire.
On scene, the fire department was able to rapidly knock down the fire but spent three hours on scene to fully extinguish the fire as the fire extended into the attic.
The homeowner escaped without injury, but a couple firefighters were treated by EMS for heat stress during the incident.
The damage estimate is about $100,000 for structure and contents.
The fire marshal determined the fire started in the kitchen and extended through the dining and family room.
The cause of the fire is listed as unattended use of cooking equipment.
The additional responding fire companies included Sargent Volunteer Fire Department, Matagorda Volunteer Fire Department, and Midfield Volunteer Fire Department. With the multiple fires that occurred at similar times, their assistance was valuable.
The fire marshal wants to remind residents to always monitor food being cooked on the stove. Always keep a working fire extinguisher near the kitchen to rapidly extinguish a fire should one occur.
