A Podcast About Baseball, Music & Culture

BAY CITY - The locally produced podcast Hooks & Runs launched its latest episode last week with guest, author Adam Lazarus.
Lazarus discussed his new book, “The Wingmen: The Unlikely, Unusual, Unbreakable Friendship Between John Glenn and Ted Williams,” published by Citadel Press this August, on the show.
John Glenn was a decorated military hero in World War II and in Korea who became a pioneer the early American space program and later, a four-term United States Senator.
Ted Williams, himself a Marine fighter pilot in the War and Conflict, returned to the Red Sox after serving in Korea, ultimately becoming a Hall of Fame inductee and arguably the greatest hitter in baseball history.
Lazarus described the unique decades-long friendship between these two American icons revealed in the book during the episode.
Glenn and Williams initially met in 1953 as Marine Corps fighter pilots in the Korean Conflict, “flying dangerous and deadly missions into North Korea,” Lazarus said.
Lazarus added the two, “ended up developing a friendship and a relationship that spanned many decades, despite their vast differences in almost every way imaginable.”
Lazarus’s earlier books include “Chasing Greatness: Johnny Miller, Arnold Palmer, and the Miracle at Oakmont” and “Best of Rivals: Joe Montana, Steve Young and the Inside Story Behind the NFL’s Greatest Quarterback Controversy.”
