In Other Words....
According to dictionary.cambridge.org, the common expression “every cloud has a silver lining” means that even the worst events or situations have some positive aspect.
When tragedy strikes, it’s been witnessed time and time again that it brings out the best in people.
Matagorda County most certainly aligns with the giving and service categories.
Having ours hearts in the right place is a beginning, but the follow-through of taking action stumbles around uncertainty, not knowing the simple specifics of how each one of us can make a difference.
The intention of this article is to make it crystal clear to readers how we can be of service in simple ways.
This month is the Crisis Center’s one and only Chicken Fried Steak fundraiser (16th annual) for Matagorda & Wharton County Crisis Centers, which is being held on Friday, Jan. 19, at the Civic Center beginning at 4 p.m.
There will be buffet-style dine-in and drive through.
It’s $20 per plate which includes a delicious chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, gravy, and a dessert.
Free beer and wine is available when you dine in at the Civic Center.
There’s a live auction, bucket raffle, and live music by Dave Owen.
All proceeds go to help fund the programs for child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence.
For more information, or if you’re interested in sponsorship opportunities, if you’d like to donate a live/silent auction item or purchase tickets, call (979)245-9109 or email the Center’s Executive Director Kelli Wright-Nelson at kelli@crisiscnt.com or Samantha at dvadvocate@crisiscnt.com.
Twelve months out of the year we can assist the Crisis Center by donating hygiene supplies for women, girls, and boys (boys are allowed shelter up until the age of 13).
I met with Brittany Matthews, deputy director at the Center, to gain a list of essential supplies.
Below is the list:
Adult and Children’s toothbrushes and toothpaste; hairbrushes and combs (regular and travel size); shampoo and conditioner (travel size); clear makeup bags with closure to keep personal hygiene supplies; tampons & pads, underwear and socks for women, girls and boys; new or slightly worn clothing/jackets specifically donated to the center for clients; basic baby bottles, bibs; medicines that can be dispensed by the center such as- Tylenol/generic pain relievers, allergy medicines (Benadryl), cough drops, cough and flu medications for nausea, diarrhea and sore throats.
Canned goods and leftovers from catered events are welcomed and accepted.
In a perfect world, domestic violence and child abuse wouldn’t exist; however, it’s real and in epidemic proportions throughout our nation.
Recently, the Crisis Center found out their budget is cut 40% in 2024 for overhead, salaries, and expenses because of the strain on the state’s assets in this area during Covid.
It’s been said that in every dark cloud, there’s always a silver lining.
How about implementing a Silver Lining Club?
There’s no annual fee, it’s all inclusive and the rewards are out of this world.
In other words, cut out this article and put it somewhere to jog your memory to add to the club’s silver lining.
