Sometimes in this job we’re presented with rumors or hearsay about nonsense things – especially when it comes from social media.
However, it has other aggravating and irritating effects to hear them in person no matter who delivers it.
And believe me, I’ve heard rumors from close friends and business associates alike.
Either way, it’s our job to investigate that “suggestion” for the root cause or truth – if it pertains to news.
But, sometimes, those tidbits of gossip are actually about you personally or pertain to some aspect of your life.
I’ve never understood the point of starting a rumor about someone or something a person isn’t directly involved in.
In fact, it seems like a genuine waste of time to me.
Last week, I was asked about the rumor that we’re “closing” the newspaper down.
Nothing could be further from the truth and we have no plans on shutting down things anytime soon.
While we may be struggling to cover every in-person event, meeting, or interview – we’re adjusting our schedules accordingly.
Plus, we have had a similar run when I broke my leg at the end of 2022.
Of course, the scheduling of events was different then since it was at the end of the year, but I think we lucked out then.
It’s strange to say something
like that, but, I feel like it’s true!
Not to mention, as my mom reminded me then and we share with Mike now: broken legs are not broken hands.
And just like my broken leg experience, it’s temporary and will soon become a thing of the past faster than expected.
I learned several crucial skills during my journey like being positive and being motivated to heal while open to re-learning basic tasks.
The best news is that Mike’s leg is healing and he’s on the road to recovery at home.
His journey varies from mine in several ways, but most of all due to the location of the femur break he doesn’t have a cast or other reinforcing support and is still a bit away from even starting to use his right leg – let alone put any weight on it.
Another hiccup is when he and mom tested positive for COVID last weekend.
We’re still on the fence as to if mom picked up the virus locally or in Sugar Land while visiting Mike in his physical/occupational therapy rehabilitation stay.
Either way, it’s a compounding factor making things harder in the long run, but we’re working through it.
In fact, I’m pretty sure we’ve bought enough Lysol that I could rig up an automatic mister to create a personal space bubble of germ-fighting spray similar to Pig-Pen from Peanuts’ trailing cloud of dirt.
Or, at least that’s how it looks in my imagination.
The better news is that my sister and I are masked up, taking every precaution available and still testing negative for COVID ourselves.
I guess that means those vaccines help, right?
Now if they could only invent one to fix broken bones or stop rumors in their tracks!
