A 22-year-old Bay City man was arrested following a New Year’s Day non-injury shooting that drew several officers to the scene.
Police Officer Chloe Taitano, Corporal Seth Alvarez, Officer Dillon Wakefield, Officer Viki Pursley, and DPS officers, were sent to the 2800 block of Sycamore, about shots being fired about 9:30 a.m. Jan. 1.
When they arrived, they determined that the shots were being fired from the 2800 block of Rugeley.
When officers went there, they took cover due to more gunshots fired, police said.
Officers used their public announcement system (PA) to have the occupants leave the house.
Several people came out of the house and agreed to talk to the officers, reports show.
Officers determined all of the people had been drinking since the night before Sand wanted to shoot their guns in the backyard.
One subject, Kenny Lopez, 22, from Bay City, admitted being one of the shooters, officers said.
It was determined that he was out on bond for another charge, which prohibited him from possessing a firearm, reports show.
Lopez was arrested and transported to the Matagorda County Jail and booked in for unlawful carrying a weapon, police said.
Two firearms were seized as evidence, officers reported.
“I commend our patrol officers and assisting agencies for their quick response, sound tactics, and professionalism in handling a dangerous situation,” Chief Christella Rodriguez said.
“Their actions ensured the safety of our officers and the surrounding neighborhood.
“I also want to thank the citizens who promptly reported the gunfire - your willingness to speak up and call law enforcement plays a critical role in keeping our community safe.”
