From STP
STP Nuclear Operating Company has begun the 26th scheduled refueling and maintenance outage on Unit 1.
The unit was safely taken offline on Friday, March 20, to begin planned work that will support another cycle of reliable, around-the-clock power for Texas.
Each refueling outage brings hundreds of specialized craft professionals and technical experts from across the country to work alongside STP’s operators, engineers, and maintenance teams.
Together, they will complete a coordinated scope of work designed to ensure long-term equipment reliability and sustained safe operations.
“Every outage is a major investment in safety, reliability, and performance,” said Chuck Kharrl, STP’s President, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Nuclear Officer.
“Our teams prepare for months to execute this work with precision. The upgrades, inspections, and testing we complete during this outage help ensure Unit 1 continues delivering clean, dependable electricity for the communities we serve.”
During the outage, approximately one-third of the reactor’s fuel assemblies will be replaced with new ones.
Thousands of preventative and corrective maintenance tasks are also planned, along with targeted inspections and testing of key plant systems and components.
Both STP units operate on an 18-month refueling cycle.
“Our people take enormous pride in the performance of our units,” Kharrl added.
“The work we are undertaking now strengthens plant reliability and sets the foundation for another strong operating cycle.”
STP schedules its refueling outages during the spring and fall, when statewide electricity demand is typically lower.
