Matagorda County Economic Development Corporation
FACTS: Barrio Energy Data Centers & Matagorda County
There’s been a lot of discussion recently about the proposed Barrio Energy data center projects. We want to make sure our community has clear, accurate, and fact-based information.
Here is what you need to know:
Smart Energy Use That Supports the Grid
Barrio Energy facilities operate as flexible loads, meaning they don’t compete with residential power demand.
• A 10MW facility ≈ 2,500 homes (not 8,000–10,000 as claimed) using ERCOT standards
• Operations shut down during peak demand (like hot summer afternoons)
• Power usage shifts to off-peak hours when capacity is available
The chart provided by Barrio Energy shows exactly how this works:
When electricity prices rise and demand spikes, the facility automatically powers down, freeing electricity for homes and businesses.
In simple terms: they use power when it’s available and step off when it’s needed most.
Zero Impact on Local Water Supply
Unlike traditional large-scale data centers:
• No city water is used
• Closed-loop cooling systems recycle coolant continuously
• No discharge, no evaporation
No Cost Burden on Residents
• Projects are located where grid capacity already exists
• Under Texas law (SB 6), the company pays for infrastructure upgrades
• Residents are not paying for these projects
Economic Impact for Texas Communities
• Data centers generated $3.2+ billion in state and local tax revenue in 2024
• Provide local investment and job opportunities
• Minimal strain on schools, roads, and public services
Designed to Be Low Impact
• Noise levels around 37 dB (quieter than a library)
• Lighting designed to prevent spillover beyond property lines
A Texas Company
Barrio Energy is a Houston-based, Texas-owned company. Their model is built around being a responsible, community-focused partner.
BOTTOM LINE
These facilities are designed to:
Support grid reliability
Use zero local water
Avoid burdening taxpayers
Contribute to the local and state economy
As always, we encourage open conversation, but it’s critical that discussions are based on accurate, verified information.
If you have questions or would like more details, we’re happy to help.
