June
We know summer is heating up around here in South Texas and so are our energy bills.
In June, focus on strategies that increase comfort while reducing A/C runtime.
Start with small, targeted moves, like shading, fans, energy efficient windows, and a programmable thermostat.
Try to cut costs and keep your home pleasant.
The easiest solution is to start with shading.
Install exterior solutions (awnings, pergolas, suns shades, or retractable sails) where the sun hits windows the hardest.
If that is out of your budget, then look into reflective window film and solar screens to reduce heat gain without blocking your view.
Plant fast-growing shade plants or ornamental trees near sun-exposed facades for a long-term payoff.
Ceiling fans are an excellent way to allow you to raise your thermostat 3-4 degrees while maintaining comfort.
Try to run the fans only when people are in the room since fans cool people, not rooms.
If your room doesn’t have a ceiling fan then a box or oscillating fan will help to push the air and cool you off.
Take a look at your window treatments, if they are not working then consider making an upgrade.
Cellular shades are the most energy efficient window treatment besides Plantation Shutters.
If that isn’t your style, then consider lined drapery as it reduces solar gain and insulates against the heat.
During peak afternoon sun, close all South and West facing windows to help reduce the temperature in your home.
Do you have a thermostat strategy in place?
Consider installing a programmable or smart thermostat and set a modest setback when the house is empty (3-5 degrees).
Avoid frequent large swings which stress equipment. Don’t forget to schedule your summer HVAC tune up!
