MC Retired Teachers to meet Sept. 2

Matagorda County Retired Teachers Association (MCRTA) members will hold its first meeting of this new “school year” on Sept. 2.
The luncheon meeting starts at 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church at 3000 9th Street.
Barbara Smith, formerly from the Matagorda County Museum, and Paula Colburn from AMBA will speak.
An HEB box lunch will be served at the cost of $11 per person and attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for the raffle at $1 per chance.
“Call (979) 241-1862 if you are new to the group so that we order the correct number of lunches, please,” added MCRTA member Dianne Farrar in a press release.
“MCRTA service, projects, and activities this year have included the Children’s Book Project, scholarships for county students majoring in education, judging student essays and digital posters projects for Matagorda County Soil and Water Conservation District, and judging 4-H projects and other entries at the fair.”
MCRTA is a voice for all employees who paid into Teacher Retirement System (TRS) including teachers, counselors, principals, other administrators, paraprofessionals, secretaries, custodians, etc.
The goals are to keep the benefits for retired TRS personnel a priority and give service to the community.
“Local chapters stay abreast of the TRS Pension and TRS Care,” she added.
“Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) are two statutory provisions in United States law that the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) successfully fought to repeal to make it fair for those who have fully paid into social security before joining the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) and/or to be able to gain their portion of their spouse’s social security.”
TRTA was successful in getting people out to vote ‘yes’ for the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) last year.
TRTA is the only organization that works exclusively for TRS Retirees and TRTA does not endorse candidates in politics.
“You can learn more at trta.org,” said Farrar.
“To join or ask questions about MCRTA call (979) 241-1862. The total cost to be a member of both the state TRTA and local MCRTA organizations is $50 annually.”
Dues may be paid at the meeting or mailed to MCRTA at PO Box 745, Bay City, TX.
“Future regular meeting dates are the first Tuesday of October, December, February, April, and May,” she added.
