Six Bay City High School students helped to save a neighbor and her family during an electrical fire on Saturday, Sept. 17.
Estela Reyes, Bay City High School Principal, received a call Monday, Sept. 19, from a parent, Kristi Miller.
Miller called Reyes explaining how six students at her high school saved her and her family from a house fire over the weekend.
“I had a parent Kristi Miller that called today bragging on our BCHS students,” Reyes said.
“She described how her home caught on fire last Saturday and gave credit to a group of high school students for saving her life, her pets and behaving as high school students during the incident.
“Mrs. Miller described that her son asked for permission to invite some friends over to cook for them.”
Miller said that when the boys were grilling their meat outside, someone heard a click on the electric box.
Miller added that it was reported to her immediately and, as she was calling 911, the four students were making sure the pets were out of the house and everyone was safe.
Also, the students made sure that everyone was across the street for their safety and used the fire extinguisher as an effort to put the fire out.
“We are really looking forward to a bright future as these high school students are true leaders of our community,” Miller said.
Miller kept describing that the students represented their parents, high school and each other as they used their leadership skills to serve others.
“Due to their fast thinking, the students were able to keep everyone safe including the pets and there was minor damage to the home due to their leadership skills,” Reyes said.
