Bay City ISD school board members unanimously approved a 2% retention incentive payment for all district employees at the regular October board meeting on Oct. 18.
All trustees were present at the meeting.
BCISD Chief Financial Officer Rick Johnson presented the retention payment options to the board with clarifications from past meetings.
“According to our legal counsel Walsh Gallegos, the payment can’t be taken away if an employee leaves before the full year term,” he explained.
“So, you can’t require them to pay it back if they were to leave.”
Johnson gave the board the option of a one-percent retention payment or a two-percent retention payment.
The payment will be determined as a percentage of the employees’ base salaries as of Oct. 18.
“The teachers have absolutely earned it this year,” said Trustee Trent Tinnin.
The payments will total $656,000 and will be delivered this December via direct deposit.
Johnson explained that the district administration will use part of the $4.6 million ESSER II federal grant to free up funds for the retention payments.
“We’re excited to offer this incentive payment,” he added.
Trustees discussed Superintendent Dr. Marshall Scott’s employment contract in closed session for about an hour and 15 minutes and took no action when they returned to the open session.
