"County COVID-19 remains low" by: Mike Reddell

While state health data shows COVID-19 categories on the rise again, Matagorda County cases remain stable.
Department of State Health Services (DSHS) reports vaccine doses, hospitalizations, average new cases and average new deaths all show increases.
As of Dec. 4, 18.7 million people have received at least one dose, which is 64.2% of Texas’ population, and 16.1 million people, or 55.2%, are fully vaccinated.
A total of 36.6 million doses have been administered, including booster shots. So far, 3.2 million people have gotten booster shots.
In Matagorda County, DSHS reports 44.4% of its residents are fully vaccinated – a slight rise - and 51.7% have received at least one dose.
Two Bay City ISD students tested positive for the disease, according to the district’s COVID-19 tracker that was posted Dec. 2.
No district employees tested positive, BCISD reports.
DSHS also reports that the county has a per capita rate of 0.8% per 1,000 residents in new COVID-19 cases.
There have been 28 new cases in the past 14 days, DSHS data showed Tuesday, Dec. 7.
The reported its first case of the omicron COVID-19 variant on Tuesday.
Early indications, DSHS said, is that the variant is extremely contagious, but little is known about the severity of the disease it causes.
Delta remains the state biggest worry, with at least 30 Texas hospitals reporting they were out of ICU beds last week, federal data shows.
