Early vote continues for May 7 election

   Early voting for the May 7 election continues this week through Friday, April 29, and again Monday and Tuesday, May 2-3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
   Election day is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 7. 
   At stake are places on the Bay City school board, Palacios City Council and Caney Creek Municipal Utility District, plus two constitutional amendments.
   Early voting polling locations are the Bay City Service Center at 2105 Avenue M in Bay City and the Matagorda County Courthouse Annex at 405 Commerce St. in Palacios.
   Bay City ISD school board Positions 1-3 are up for election and feature two incumbents: Trent Tinnin for Position 1 and James Scardami for Position 2 respectively.
   Tinnin is unopposed while Scardami faces off with Kimberly D. Lewis for his position.
   Position 3 is a contested race between Kim Willett, Marcos Aguilera, and Felix Nunez, II.
   Two constitutional amendments are also featured on the May 7 ballot.
   Proposition Number 1 proposes a constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for the reduction of the amount of a limitation on the total amount of property taxes that may be imposed for general elementary and secondary public school purposes on the residence homestead of a person who is elderly or disabled in order to reflect any statutory reduction in the maximum compressed
rate of the maintenance and operations taxes imposed for those purposes on the person’s homestead from the preceding tax year.
   Proposition Number 2 proposes a constitutional amendment increasing the amount of the residence homestead exemption from property taxes for public school purposes from $25,000 to $40,000.
   City of Palacios elections include David Kocurek and Jim Gardener facing off for mayor.
   Palacios City Council Place 1 incumbent Larry E. Glenn is challenged by Gary Hafernick.
   Place 2 is a contested race between Mark Rusk and Sharon P. Trainor.
   Position 6 incumbent Michael Dotson faces James Georgi at the polls.
   Palacios residents also will vote on Propositions A-E.
   Caney Creek Municipal Utility District directors’ election features William Smith and Mike Wilmore facing off for Position 1.
   Doug Harris and Kandas Graham are the candidates for Positions 3 and 5, respectively.
   Election Day polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 7.
   Those locations are as follows:

  •     Precincts 1A-1F at the Bay City Service Center, 2105 Av. M in Bay City.
  •     Precincts 2 and 10 at Matagorda Fireman’s Hall, 683 Market St. in Matagorda.
  •     Precincts 3A, 3B, and 7 at Matagorda County Courthouse Annex, 405 Commerce St. in Palacios.
  •     Precincts 4, 8, and 12 at Blessing Fire Station, 88 Avenue A in Blessing.
  •     Precincts 5 and 9 at Van Vleck Community Center, 87 Avenue F in Van Vleck.
  •     Precincts 6 and 13 at Sargent Fire Station, 22037 FM 457 in Sargent.
