The close of the early voting polls on Friday for Saturday’s May 6 elections shows 1,407 voters were zoned for the Port of Bay City Authority’s Matagorda Harbor expansion bond issue who had cast a ballot.
In addition, there were 572 voter check-ins with the Bay City council race on their ballot.
“When considering numbers, keep in mind that some voters have multiple races on their ballot,” County Clerk Stephanie Wurtz said.
“For Saturday, I am stressing that voters please remember that locations differ from many other previous elections,” Wurtz added.
“I strongly suggest they call our office or the voter registrar to find out which voting precinct they are and where to vote on May 6th.”
Election Day polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 6.
Precincts 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 1F, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 13 will vote at Bay City Service Center, 2105 Avenue M, Bay City.
Precincts 3A, 3B and 7 will vote at Matagorda County Navigation District #1, 1602 Main Street, Palacios.
Saturday’s elections include a $68 million bond election for Port of Bay City Authority to expand Matagorda Harbor.
In addition, the May 6 elections also will decide City Council positions for the City of Bay City and City of Palacios, and trustee seats for Palacios ISD.
The following races/propositions will be on the respective ballots:
City of Bay City Council two, three-year positions up for election include:
N No. 1 Incumbent Floyce Brown, who is opposed by Benjamin Flores.
N No. 2, held by incumbent Jim Folse, presently mayor pro tem, who is unopposed.
City of Palacios council seats up for election are now held by:
Place 3, Chip Woolf
Place 4, Troy Lewis
Place 5, Raylynn Samora
Woolf filed for reelection, while Margaret “Margie” Wier has filed for Place 4, and Roy Barnett and Jason Hink filed for Place 5.
Joe Monk and Donna Harvey Schulman filed for the special election to fill the vacant Place 6.
Palacios ISD - Trustee Positions No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7
Position 5, is held by Ron Laws, who seeks re-election and is opposed by Becky Aguilera
Position 6, is held by Fabian Marroquin, who seeks re-election and is opposed is challenged by Haley Garcia.
Position 7, held by Marcos Aparicio and he’s unopposed.
The Port of Bay City Authority bond election calls for providing improvements and allow for increased capacity at Matagorda Harbor.
The Port Authority held meetings on the proposal at Matagorda, Bay City and Sargent and fielded questions and heard complaints about issues surrounding the harbor.
“The Port intends to use this investment to attract private developers to the new Matagorda Harbor complex,” said George Harrison, port authority board chairman.
“I believe this synergy will improve the wellbeing of residents and tourists alike, through expanded opportunities for recreation and education, improved access to the surrounding marine environment, and robust prosperity from hundreds of new jobs and more than $50 million in estimated economic activity per year.”
