Greg Baker - a fifth generation cattle rancher in Matagorda County – is the new County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources for Matagorda County.
Baker replaces outgoing County Agent Aaron Sumrall, who earlier announced he is going into private business.
Baker formally held the same position for Calhoun County for the past two and half years.
Before that, he was employed by the Texas Department of Agriculture as a pesticide inspector for the past 27 years.
“Some of you may have had an encounter with me at some point in my past career with the Texas Department of Agriculture, good, bad or indifferent,” Baker said.
“When this position came available for county extension agent in Matagorda County, I thought to myself that I would be a good fit for this position.
“As a county extension agent in Calhoun County, a fifth generation cattle rancher in Matagorda County, and the connections and knowledge I gained while working with the Texas Department of Agriculture, this was an easy transition,” Baker added.
Baker attended Sul Ross State University and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science while participating in football and track.
“My professors and the people I met while at school who came from ranching and agricultural backgrounds made a positive impact and persuaded me to follow a career in agriculture,” he noted.
“My plan is to provide educational programs, assistance and make connections to this great agricultural county,” Baker said.
