"Hurricane Nicholas makes landfall near Sargent" by: Jessica Shepard

Hurricane Nicholas made landfall just after midnight Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Matagorda Peninsula – about 10 miles West of Sargent.
Nicholas was at a Category 1 hurricane strength after bumping off the coast and returning before landfall at around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Category 1 hurricanes are defined as having reached 75-95 mph winds and usually damage trees, power lines, older mobile homes, and windows.
Power was out throughout Matagorda County Tuesday.
As of press time Tuesday morning, there was extensive flooding and damage in Sargent.
“Every neighborhood in Sargent was affected by this hurricane,” said Precinct 6 Deputy Constable Bill Orton via Facebook at 6 a.m. Tuesday.
“The extent of that damage has yet to be determined. Once daylight gets here and crews can get started putting our utilities back in order and the county can clear roadways, hopefully then we’ll have a better understanding of the damage.”
Orton reminded everyone to be aware of their surroundings in case they encounter downed powerlines, debris or wildlife.
A large number of snakes were noted as being on the move during and after the hurricane.
