Juneteenth falls on Thursday, June 19, this year.
All federal offices will be closed in observance of the holiday, including banking institutions and the United States Postal Service.
UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will be available, and their store locations will be open on June 19, according to the companies’ websites.
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) will be closed on Juneteenth.
County and city offices will be closed in observance as well.
Bay City and Van Vleck ISDs are listed as closed on Thursday for each
district’s respective calendar, but will re-open at regular summer hours Friday, June 20.
Tidehaven, Palacios, and Matagorda ISDs will remain open Thursday.
Federal, state, and local municipal offices will re-open Friday, June 20, at regular business hours.
The Bay City Sentinel office will also be closed on Thursday, but will re-open at normal hours on Friday as well.
Sanford Community Center hosts “Juneteenth: A Real Talk” from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Center, 907 8th St. in Palacios.
The free event features author and motivational speaker Cedrick Lafleur as its guest speaker.
Juneteenth marks the events of June 19, 1865, when the last Black slaves of the Confederacy were ordered free following the arrival of Union troops in Galveston.
The holiday is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day and was officially recognized as a federal holiday by President Joe Biden in 2021.
