The Lions Eye Bank of Texas District 2-S4 Bowl-A-Thon will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Schulman’s movie Bowl Grille, 6655 7th Street.
Proceeds from the Bowl-A-Thon benefit the Lions Eye Bank of Texas.
The bank promotes the work of the Lions Eye Bank of Texas at Baylor College of Medicine and to provide community education about the need for donation, vision safety, and prevention for the causes of preventable corneal blindness.
The Lions Eye Bank of Texas services the entire Texas Gulf Coast and parts of East Texas.
In 2021, the Eye Bank distributed over 1,600 donor corneas for transplant.
Thanks to the Lions’ contributions and funds from special fundraising events, the Eye Bank can continue its educational and community outreach programs along with providing corneas at no charge for indigent patients in need of a transplant.
Almost anyone between the age of 2-72 years old can be a donor.
You can register to be a potential donor regardless of age or medical history.
Your medical condition at the time of death will determine what can be donated.
Most people who are eligible to donate blood can become a suitable eye donor.
Since 1961, over 1.8 million people have had their vision restored worldwide.
Donations do not normally delay funeral arrangements.
The entire eye is not used for transplantation but is sometimes recovered for research, education, and other grafts.
There is no cost to the donor or their family for eye/cornea donation.
About 97% of all cornea transplant operations successfully restore the recipient’s vision.
If you are sick or injured and admitted to the hospital, the number one priority is to save your life.
An open casket funeral is still possible for eye, organ, and tissue donors.
