From LyondellBasell
As longtime members of the Bay City and Matagorda County communities, LyondellBasell is proud to serve as a key industrial employer committed to supporting local growth and development.
LyondellBasell materials are the building blocks of everyday items which include trash can liners, cases and crates, pails, merchandise bags, and corrugated pipe that are used in communities throughout the U.S.
To maintain those needs and keep the Matagorda plant in good working order, the site has an upcoming planned maintenance and shutdown, which we refer to as a turnaround, starting Sept. 29.
A turnaround is a maintenance and engineering activity where the plant is shut down and equipment is inspected, cleaned, repaired, removed or installed before the plant restarts. Turnarounds typically occur every five to seven years and the last one at the LYB Matagorda facility was in 2019.
During the turnaround, the site will have nearly 700 employees and contractors working at the plant. The additional contractors range in skills from pipefitters, welders, electricians, scaffold builders, insulation workers, and crane and rigging.
The Bay City and Matagorda areas may see these workers staying at nearby hotels, eating at restaurants, and grocery shopping at H-E-B.
To help with increased vehicular traffic in the area, traffic control signage will be in place along Route 60 and local law enforcement officers will assist with directing traffic during peak hours, from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. We ask that you please be patient when traveling in the area and encourage an alternate route, if possible.
The turnaround is scheduled to end mid-November with minimal impacts to our community, but you may see flaring at the beginning and the end of the turnaround when the plant is shut down and starting up.
Our goal is to complete the work safely and efficiently with minimal impacts to the community and we appreciate your patience during the turnaround.
