"MCEDC discusses moderate-price housing" by: Mike Reddell

Another housing developer is showing interest in Matagorda County, Mitch Thames told the MCEDC board at its meeting Friday, Oct. 29.
The developer, Jay Neal, has major investors and is considering “smaller homes” in the less than $150,000 price range, said Thames, president of Bay City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture.
“He has a very good track record in 20 locations,” Thames added.
MCEDC Chairman Nate McDonald also has met Neal and said the developer is looking at about 100 acres.
The development has a “very strong management district to keep property nice,” McDonald said, adding it has a “little more teeth” than that of a homeowners association.
McDonald also pointed out that Neal’s firm puts in roads, water, and sewer services that comply with local specifications.
In other action, the board heard MCEDC Director of Communications Heather Case’s report on combining the Dec. 8 annual meeting with a presentation from Strategic Plan consultant Jay Garner.
MCEDC Executive Director Scott Hardwick has discussed plans for Garner to lead a public meeting on the Strategic Plan rollout.
Several months in MCEDC development, the Strategic Plan – a “road map” for the county - will be part of the annual meeting, which includes presentation of the George Holtz and Tiger Lane awards.
Hardwick’s report to the board included updates on the county tax abatement requests from OQ Chemicals and Matagorda Bay Distillery.
OQ Chemicals is getting draft agreements from “both sides,” and the distillery’s recent public hearing on its abatement request was tabled, Hardwick said.
“They’re ready to move forward,” Hardwick noted about the distillery.
OQ Chemicals abatement request is part of its planned campus expansion to accommodate Roehm America’s proposed $500 million plant.
