Museum gathers list of top harvested crop in Matagorda County

From Matagorda County Museum

Did you know that according to the most recent data available, cotton is often the top harvested crop in Matagorda County, Texas?
It should be noted that the specific crop leading in harvested acreage can vary from year to year depending on market conditions and water availability.
Taking top listing for important harvested crops in Matagorda County include:
  • Cotton: Frequently the crop with the largest acreage, according to the Matagorda County Economic Development Corporation.
  • Corn: A major crop with significant acreage planted and harvested annually.
  • Grain Sorghum: A consistent top crop for the county.
  • Rice: Historically a “mainstay” crop of the area, though acreage has declined in recent years due to issues with water availability.
  • Soybeans: Another key row crop for the county’s economy.
  • Forage/Hay: Important for feeding the county’s large cattle population.
In addition to these harvested crops, turfgrass is a substantial and high-value part of the county’s agricultural production, accounting for a significant portion of the Texas turf market.
Our temporary exhibit for fall will soon be under construction and will highlight a typical fall harvest for Matagorda County. Keep an eye out for a post announcing it’s completion and make plans to drop in and check it out in person!
