"New Business Spotlight: Henry Perez wants ‘family’ feel in his Truth barbershop" by: Jessica Shepard

If you’ve been downtown in Bay City recently, you may have noticed “Truth” and wondered what sort of business it might be based on that name alone.
Located at 2113 Avenue G, Suite B – Truth is a new barbershop offering haircuts for men, women, and children by barbers.
Currently, the barbershop is open Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but could see expanded hours in the future.
Haircuts are $25 and up for adults and $20 and up for children.
That’s just the beginning of plans for the shop.
Owner Henry Perez plans to also feature micro-blading, make-up artistry, and more as the business grows.
“We want to meet the needs of all of our customers,” he explained.
“Right now, it’s just me and a few barbers, but we have booths for any certified hairstylist or cosmetologist.”
Perez explained that he wants to make every customer “feel like family.”
“I want to develop connections and friendships with our clients,” he explained.
“You’re not just a customer for us – here, you’re family! Truth is about being real, honest, truthful, and using our skills to make your experience the best you’ve ever had.”
Perez said he has been cutting hair since he was 11 years old and recently became a Texas Class A Barber.
“It’s just always been something I’ve had a talent and skill for,” he explained.
“I cut all my friends’ hair through high school, too. Now, I’m finally able to take what I love to do and make it a rewarding experience to share with everyone else.”
Perez was born and raised in Bay City and lives there still with his wife Crystal and their four children.
“I have to give most of my credit to God and my wife Crystal,” said Perez.
“Without her help, this vision would not have come together the way it has. She’s been a big help with the interior design of the shop and working right alongside me the entire time.”
Truth features vintage-style barber chairs, two pool tables, and space for a bar.
“We wanted this to be the sort of shop that you could relax in and hang out a bit while waiting for your appointment,” said Perez.
“The bar will feature beer, wine, margaritas, and micheladas sometime near March. We just need to get a bartender trained and the other permits required for serving.”
Perez added that clients over 21 now could bring their own beer and have it chilled to drink while they wait.
“We’re also looking at adding a total of 10 TV screens in here,” he added.
“And not just to cover sports games, but to also stay up-to-date on the news – especially when dealing with the pandemic.”
The shop also features booths in the front for checkers, chess, and domino games.
“We want to make sure our clients are enjoying themselves before, during, and after their haircut,” said Perez.
“We’re also looking at ways to give back to the community for supporting us. Right now, I’m working with the Bay City Christian Boxing Club donating haircuts before the boxers compete.”
One of Perez’s long-term goals is to open another location in Rosenberg.
“Right now I’m just living and working with my dream job here,” he added.
“But, keep an eye on us here at ‘Truth.’ We’ve got big goals and plans ahead of us and want to grow with our community.”
