Officer enters wrecked auto to save woman

A Bay City police officer entered a wrecked vehicle to keep a trapped 72-year-old woman from choking until EMS arrived.
When officers arrived at a head-on crash 100 block of Avenue F North at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, they saw a pickup rollover with the 72-year-old female trapped inside.
Sergeant Marino Chavez saw the female was having a hard time breathing because she was hanging from her seatbelt.
So, he removed his outer bullet proof vest, climbed in the truck, and held her up to prevent her from choking.
Bay City Volunteer Fire Department was called out and the Jaws of Life was used to remove her.
Chavez was in the vehicle with her for about 30 minutes until a firefighter traded places with him.
Shortly afterwards, she was removed from the vehicle and taken to a Houston Hospital via Life flight.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 59-year-old man, also was taken to a hospital via Life flight.  Preliminary reports show that the driver of the pickup truck was traveling north when it crossed the line, onto oncoming traffic, where it struck an SUV.
There were no fatalities reported, but the Crash Investigation Team with the Bay City Police Department was called out to assist with the investigation.
