Rainstorms put Matagorda County on high alert June 12

   Matagorda County saw up to 14 inches of rainfall, Thursday, June 12 - some of the highest numbers in the state, according to several news reports.
  KHOU 11 Meteorologist Kim Castro described it on June 12 as “close to a foot of rain in six hours,” adding that “this early morning has been dumping buckets, especially along the coastline.”
  Matagorda County issued a declaration of disaster for the entire county in response to the ongoing severe weather conditions, including possible flash flooding and a potential tornado in the Palacios area. 
  This declaration authorized local authorities to take necessary actions to mitigate the impact of the storm and ensure the safety of residents.
  The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Flash Flood Warning for Matagorda County and southeastern Texas. 
   Thunderstorms affected the area since early June 12, causing significant rain, localized flooding, and power outages across multiple communities. 
  AEP Texas reported power outages across the area due to the severe weather. 
  At one point, about 2,000 customers in Matagorda County were without power, with the largest outage impacting Palacios, where around 950 customers are affected. 
  Additionally, Jackson Electric worked to restore power to about 1,600 accounts in the Collegeport and Palacios area due to a transmission line issue.    
  Heavy rainfall has caused flooding on roadways and in low-lying areas, particularly near Palacios, La Ward, and Blessing. 
  Local Emergency Management officials reported water over roadways and advised residents travel avoid travel if possible.
  Texas 35 between Palacios and Port Comfort was closed due to high water, and FM 1862 between Blessing and Texas 35 South also was closed.
  Matagorda County Judge Bobby Seiferman kept an eye on the prognosis.. 
  The biggest concern in this situation is the coastal areas of the county. 
  During the event, Matagorda County Emergency Management Director Amanda Campos, and her team monitored the situation.
