"State: COVID-19 vaccines prevent deaths" by: Mike Reddell

State health officials announced new data Monday, Nov. 8, that shows COVID-19 vaccines dramatically prevents death and is the best tool to prevent transmission of the virus.
Of nearly 29,000 Texans who have died from COVID-related illnesses since January, only 8% were fully vaccinated, according to Texas Department of State Health Service (DSHS) findings.
More than half of those fully vaccinated who died were Texans older than 75, the age group more vulnerable to COVID-19, DSHS data shows.
DSHS shows that 43% of Matagorda County residents are fully vaccinated, while most of the surrounding counties have higher percentages.
As of Nov. 6, about 53.4% of Texas’ 29.1 million people have been fully vaccinated.
Some 93% of Texans are age 5 and older and are eligible for a vaccine.
Meanwhile, the third wave of the virus is declining in the state and in Matagorda County.
There’s been 19 cases in the past 14 days in the county, for a per capita average of 0.5 cases per 1,000 people.
And, BCISD’s COVID-19 tracker shows one student tested positive, while no staff member tested positive, in the latest posting last Thursday, Nov. 4.
Overall, Matagorda County has had 5,058 confirmed cases, 1,036 probable cases, 157 deaths, 13 active cases and about 5,980 recovered, DSHS data shows.
