"2001 Blackcat State Champion Byron Jones returns to coach the Blackcats" By Victoria Bragg

Bay City ISD Chief Communication Officer

Coach Byron Jones graduated in 2001 from BCHS, after winning the football state championship.
Jones received a scholarship from Texas A&M in 2001, and played semi-pro football after graduating in 2004.
Jones said he is excited to return as the varsity football defensive back coach, assisting with the Blackcats’ victories this season.
I know many community members will be excited to know he is back on the field, and working with his old teammate Head Coach Robert Jones.
“Byron is a great fit for our situation,” said Athletic Director Warren Trahan.
“He teaches technique because he played technique,” Trahan added.
“He has great communication skills with our kids.
“He came from Bay City and knows what it is like to be from Bay City,” Trahan noted.
“He is glad to be here and I am extremely happy that we got him here.
“He is a great asset to our staff,” Trahan said.

Byron Jones Interview: What is your position at BCHS?
“I’m the Defensive Back Coach for varsity football team. I also coach basketball and track and I am a Special Education Inclusion Teacher.”
What is your history at BCHS?
“I played here from 1998 to 2001 when I graduated, and we won the state championship my senior year in high school.”
What was life after graduating from BCHS? Highlights, Football?
“I got a scholarship to go play at Texas A&M my senior year.
“I was there from 2001 to 2004, where I was a letterman all 4 years.
“I played as a true freshman.
“I think my highlight was Gallery Furniture Bowl my freshman year, I caught three interceptions in one game.
I think that was like, my best game of my career. “My senior year, I was All-Conference 2nd Team,” he said.
“After that, I signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons and tried to play pro-ball for a while.
“My last football play was arena football for Tampa Bay Storm, 2006 to 2010.
What made you choose to come back to BCHS?
“Just the opportunity to come back home and give back to my community.
“Also, a chance to work with Robert Jones the head football coach.
“We played together in high school, so I thought it was going to be a great opportunity for me to come in and help out somebody that I respect so much, Coach Jones, and just to come back and try to help bring Bay City back to what it used to be.”
What are you looking forward to this year working with the Blackcats?
“Really, just getting to know the guys, getting to know all of the players.
“I think I’ve been able to build a good rapport in the short time I’ve been here.
“Just taking it all in being back at home and being back around family, I’m enjoying my experience being back home.”
What are some things that you’ve been able to implement or add to working with the Blackcats this year?
“I think my biggest asset I’m trying to bring to the team is just building that competitive fire, getting those guys to compete out there.
“Making them understand that competition is going to make them better. “That’s the main thing that we’ve been working on.”
What are your thoughts on the team this year?
“I think the team this year has a chance to be pretty special.
“We’ve got a lot of mix of young talent with some of the veteran guys who got a chance to play last year.
“I’m very excited about this year’s team and this opportunity for them to have a lot of success.
What does Coach Byron Jones’ future look like now that you’ve returned home?
“Right now I am just trying to lead these guys to the playoffs,” Jones said.
“I’m trying to stay focused and look at the short term, and just enjoying my time being back and hopefully, we finish the year off strong.
