Precinct 2 Commissioner
EDTIOR’S NOTE: Precinct 2 Commissioner Mike Estlinbaum recently posted this information about Revetment Road near Sargent.
I’m sure you are all aware by now that Revetment Rd is destroyed. We have worked constantly patching it to keep it passable until we could get a beach to protect it.
One doesn’t have to be a soothsayer to know this was inevitable.
But the day has come that a patch job won’t fix it.
As a steward of your tax money I can’t keep throwing precious money at it just to be washed away in the next storm.
I have been sounding the sirens about this road for months in every breakwater meeting I’ve been in with the GLO.
I have told them this is the only land passage to the project and it’s going to be destroyed if we get a storm of any significance.
I sent pictures of the road before the storm to show our efforts and that it was indeed a functional road and told them what was going to happen.
Yesterday we were able to assess the damage and take photos of the aftermath.
GLO is now understanding what I’ve been telling them for months.
They are telling me they are discussing this with Texas Land Commissioner Buckingham, USACE, TDEM and TXDOT to address this road.
This road is a little complicated.
It’s “maintained” by the county but is owned by USACE.
GLO has skin in the game since this is their only access to the breakwater project.
Obviously this is not a maintenance issue.
This is the result of many years of delays in the GLO breakwater project.
Please trust that I will keep fighting for Sargent like I have been, but with ramped up tenacity.
In the meantime, the East side will be the only access to beach opportunities for a while.
Monday we will begin clearing debris off that road and rebuilding it to the East mooring station and that beach entrance.
That road took a beating during the storm as well.
We should have it finished by next weekend and for the 4th.
I don’t like all the beach traffic now going through the residential Canal Drive any more than the residents there do.
I will be pleading with the Sheriff and Constable offices to please increase patrol on Canal Dr.
This is where we are, what I have done and what I’m doing. I will pass along productive information as I get it.
