Smoke detectors are credited with saving the lives of a Fifth Street resident and her adult grandson when the house they were in caught fire about 6 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21.
The Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, Bay City Police Department, and the Bay City Fire Marshal were dispatched to the house fire at 1512 Fifth Street.
The resident and her adult grandson were awoken by alarming smoke detectors.
The residents saw light smoke throughout the home, reports show.
She called 911, reporting that the outside wall was on fire.
The fire department brought the fire under control in about 15 minutes, but remained on scene an additional 45 minutes to ensure there were no additional hot spots.
Fire damage was estimated at $10,000.
No one was injured during the incident.
The investigation is continuing as a cause has not yet been determined, Shook said after a preliminary investigation. Anyone with information is requested to contact the Bay City Fire Marshal at 979-318-7130.
Shook reminds residents that smoke detectors will save lives.
In addition, because of the early identification of this fire, damage was limited to the outside wall of the home.
Residents should make sure they have working smoke detectors in their home.
Test the detectors monthly to make sure they are working properly.
Have a fire escape plan for your home with two paths of exit from each room, he said.
