It looks like Matagorda will get a new Post Office – nearly two years after the previous post office lost its lease and mail patrons were sent to Wadsworth.
The US Postal Service (USPS) sent a letter proposing a new lease for a post office building on county property in Matagorda, Precinct 2 Commissioner Kent Pollard told Commissioners Court Monday, Oct. 4.
The lease expired in October 2019 on the previous post office near Stanley’s store in Matagorda, and the town’s post office boxes were temporarily moved to the Wadsworth post office – a 20-mile roundtrip.
Pollard noted the hardship of that travel to elderly Matagorda residents to get their mail.
The new proposed site that was suggested to USPS by Pollard will include a building, parking lot and septic system on a half-acre site on the county property.
“This is just in the preliminary stages,” Pollard commented.
