"Roehm gets spotlight at commissioners court" by:Mike Reddell

Roehm America’s plans for a $500 million plant were in the spotlight as Roehm officials thanked the court and community for welcoming the company at the commissioners court’s meeting Monday, Oct. 18.
The Roehm officials were at the meeting, as the court first held a public hearing then later approved changes to clerical errors in the 312 tax abatement agreement between Roehm and Matagorda County that was approved Sept. 28, 2020.
The changes were to tax reinvestment zone maps for the Roehm plant that will be on the OQ Chemicals campus at the Port of Bay City.
The Roehm plant will be a tremendous project for Matagorda County, said Scott Hardwick, executive director of Matagorda County Economic Development Corporation.
He also pointed out the Roehm project will include employing 74 jobs paying an average of $85,000 a year.
The court also approved 100% designs of four projects part of a GLO contract.
They include electric generators at Blessing lift station and water plant and at the Matagorda water plant.
In addition, the project includes extensive sewer and levee rehabilitation in Blessing and levee pump stations for Matagorda.
   In other action, the court:

  •     Appointed Jacob Miles as deputy constable under his father, Precinct 4 Constable David Miles.

The constable said his son, who will work part-time for no pay, also is in private security and wants to stay current for his law enforcement certification.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Bubba Frick commended the constable’s office for handling the “school zones very efficiently.
“We look forward to having another constable,” Frick added.
In a related action, the court approved Miles’ request for a resolution authorizing a Border Assistance Program grant application for sophisticated equipment.
Of the $1.8 billion grant, Miles said the county would get between $45,000 and $47,000.

  •     Authorized Bay City Main Street to serve alcohol on county courthouse grounds with a temporary TABC permit for Camofest Jan. 29, 2022.
  •     Declared a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe as salvage to be sold as scrap.

The item came up at the last court meeting when the Tahoe was for salvage and auction, but the action was amended to salvage only, because the vehicle doesn’t have an engine.

  •     Accepted a $1,000 contribution from Jackson Electric toward the Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Oct. 9.
  •     Promoted Robin Daniel to Senior Deputy District Clerk at $12.73 an hour.

Commissioners also had seven items for consideration in closed meeting Monday.
After reconvening in open session, the court:

  •     Authorized Bill Orton to purchase a security system from Garrett Security.
  •     Authorized Orton to purchase a conveyor belt from Quill.
  •     Authorized an officer reimbursement agreement for employee #2765.
