City Council voted to donate the 16th Street Valiant Pool to BCISD, approved an engineering contract for the North Water Plant, and reviewed a bid cost estimate for the Texas Theater Project at council’s Oct. 26 meeting.
Council’s donation of the pool ties into BCISD’s discussion of a pool project that includes several options.
The $747,100 engineering contract with Garver, LLC is part of the new North Water Plant – off Texas 60 north - under the Texas Water Development Board funded $20.3 million water improvement project.
The estimated total cost of the Texas Theater and Herald Building renovation is $8,402,242.
City Manager Shawna Burkhart explained the estimate was needed because “we didn’t have a good number” on the proposed project.
Tourism Director Heidi Martinez said discussions about demolishing the old adjacent Herald Building present a problem – restrooms for both buildings are located in the Herald Building.
Martinez suggested workshop meetings, visits to similar projects in other cities, and surveys to help determine the theater’s future.
In other action, council:
N Voted 3-2 against a tourism logo proposed by Martinez and the tourism council.
N Approved applying for a Texas Community Resiliency Program grant to support the Economic Action Committee of the Gulf Coast.
Engineering Tech Alyssa Dibbern said a minimum grant request of $500,000 for an EAC community center would the organization “to reach its full potential.”
